HOW CHILDREN LEARN: UNDERSTANDING COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT

This workshop delves more deeply into cognitive development in children, and is uniquely designed to meet the needs of the participants attending the workshop.  We will examine how children learn at different stages, and the critical role of the caregiver in facilitating intellectual growth at each stage.  Members will participate in games and activities that will enable them to experience learning from the child's point of view, and will directly relate these learning experiences to your specific setting, whether it be a home environment, camp, school, or extra-curricular activity.  Topics will include: creating an optimal emotional environment for learning; allowing learning to "unfold" as opposed to directly "teaching"; facilitating learning through creative and imaginative play; and how negative and positive responsiveness of the caregiver affects learning.
