RAISING SELF-ESTEEM

In this session, participants will briefly explore healthy emotional development in children, and the power caregivers hold in shaping children's beliefs about themselves.  Caregiver behaviors that can either promote or destroy self-esteem, security and social competence will be discussed.  Participants will then explore methods of increasing feelings of self-worth and self-esteem in the children they care for or work with.  Topics will include: modeling interactions that assist children in feeling secure; using praise effectively; positive methods of teaching children to get along with others; understanding and respecting each child's unique personality; encouraging without pressuring; choosing respectful words when speaking to children; and ways to empower children.  Concrete tools and techniques that can be used by caregivers in everyday life to increase self-esteem in children will be provided.
